Willy’s short coming and false dreams have a significant impact on his suicide. Lack of family support, complications within his life, and the imperfections within his view of the American dream coincides with his false hope throughout the book. Willy’s tragic flaws in Death of a Salesman trigger his suicide.
Willy’s attempt to acquire the American Dream ultimately makes himself his greatest enemy. His continuous web of lies and false hope derive from his ideology to boast himself, so he can make himself better than who he actually is. He believes that “the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead” and this is an insufficient way of thinking (Miller 21). His standards of being successful are having good looks and being well liked; however, he cannot live up to his own standards. Author Fred Ribkoff states, “[H]e is driven by the feelings of inadequacy and failure to seek himself outside of himself, in the eyes of others”. Ben had a significant impact on Willy’s life even after his death. To Willy, Ben represents the success that he never had. Author Steven R. Centola suggests that, “[B]en embodies more than just the image of success in Willy’s mind; he also represents the road not taken. In other words he is, in many ways, Willy’s alter ego”.
